TSCA “Winter Series” Report: Nashville

Greg Jackson wins HOA while Tim Jewell takes M1.

Cold rain failed to chill the hot competition provided by 59 competitors in the 2nd event of the 2005 Tennessee Sporting Clays Association “Winter Series”. Held at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex, shooters were greeted by an exceptional course, which had been well groomed and expanded with additional shooting stations in preparation for the up-coming Gamaliel Cup.

“I always enjoy shooting at TCTC but today, the course was in super shape with many challenging targets” said Greg Jackson. “Larry Summarell and the staff definitely worked hard preparing the course.”

Rain often wreaks havoc on trap machines. Water-soaked targets and wet electronics can cause repeated no-birds, delays and frustration. Such is not a problem at TCTC.

“We invested in Mattarelli traps which are very, very reliable,” said TCTC manager, Larry Summarell. “We then keep our traps covered, at all times. A steady rain during a tournament does not affect our traps or targets.”

Another unique feature of the TCTC sporting clays course helps shooters to remain warm and dry on cold, wet days. This feature is a graveled road, which allows competitors to drive their personal cars between stations on the mile-long course.

“It is a real convenience to use a vehicle to travel the course,” said Hunter Class Champ, Dan Nelson. “Nobody enjoys walking in a cold rain. Driving a Suburban between stations allowed my flight to keep warm and our equipment to remain dry. No need to walk or freeze in a golf cart at TCTC!”

Adverse weather was not a problem for master-class shooters Greg Jackson, Tim Jewell and Martin Odom, who each turned in an outstanding score of 94, resulting in a 3-way tie for the win. To decide the victor, a shoot-off under TCTC’s new covered five-stand was quickly arranged. After the 25 bird shoot-off, 17 year-old Greg Jackson was named the winner with a fantastic score of 24, while Tim Jewell and Martin Odom claimed Master 1st and 2nd respectively.

The TSCA Winter Series has gained popularity among Tennessee’s tournament and casual shooters, alike.

“The Winter Series was developed to provide quality competition during the traditional off-season,” said TSCA president Rhonda Barfield. “Because entry fees are so reasonable, the Winter Series is a great opportunity to introduce new shooters to competitive shooting. And the Winter Series provides an opportunity for shooters to travel to many of Tennessee’s excellent sporting clays courses.”

Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to all of the participants. The next Winter Series shoot will be on February 5th at Montlake Classic Clays, a new and fantastic course in Chattanooga. See you there!
