TSCA “Winter Series” Report: Memphis

Tim Jewell claims HOA. Greg Jackson wins M1.

January 8th marked the start of the Tennessee Sporting Clays Association 2005 Winter Series. This first competition, in the 10 event winter series, was held at the impressive facilities of the Memphis Gun Club. Cloudy skies and cold winds did not deter 64 die-hard tournament shooters from participating in this kick-off event.

Those who have not visited the Memphis Gun Club are missing a treat. Situated on a very large tract of property, the club offers an array of shooting opportunities including world-class sporting clays, trap, skeet, rifle, pistol, cowboy action, and archery. It is fun to be strolling the sporting clays course and be able to watch authentically attired cowboys and girls, on the nearby cowboy action fields, firing peacemakers and 73' Winchesters with steel plates clang loudly.

The sporting clays course was certainly a challenge. Situated in a mostly flat, wooded area, the targets were difficult for even young eyes to pick up agianst the dark backgrounds and very cloudy conditions.

The flat terrain was overcome by elevating several traps. The centerpiece of the course had to be the fantastic 80-foot tower, which seemed to disappear into the clouds. Many scores suffered greatly at the foot of the infamous tower. The trap setter did a masterful job of setting the fully automated course.

Food was hot off the grill and delicious. The staff of the Memphis Gun Club did a wonderful job of organizing a very successful event. TSCA president Rhonda Barfield was on hand tending to last minute details. Thanks Rhonda, for all you do.

When the day ended, Scott Mitchell was crowned the event champion with a super score of 86 while young Greg Jackson claimed Master 1st and Junior champ. Congratulations to all the winners!

The next competition of the Winter Series will be held in Nashville at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex on January 29th. For more details see this website or visit www.tn-sporting.com. We hope to see you there!
