TSCA Winter Series Report: Big Springs

Everyone had a “big time” at Big Springs. Mike Redmond is on a roll!

March 26, 2005

Big Springs Clay Target Sports, near Murfreesboro, Tenn., hosted the 7th shoot in the TSCA Winter Series. Betty and Alan Loveless, owners of Big Springs, are true ambassadors of the shooting sports. Each contributes many hours meeting with students, parents and schools to ensure the continued growth of the Scholastic Clay Target Program. Today, hundreds of kids participate in Tennessee’s SCTP and several teams could be seen practicing trap at Big Springs during Saturday’s event. Thank you, Betty and Alan!

Joey Pulley won B-Class with a remarkable 91

Saturday’s weather could not have been nicer. Light winds and 75-degree temperatures reminded everyone that it is springtime in Tennessee. Big Spring’s comfortable clubhouse and pro-shop are first class and a great place to relax between rounds. The lunch provided to all the participants was the Winter Series favorite---more barbeque!

The sporting clays course meanders along a wooded hillside and one large open field. Sporting clays is becoming a spectator sport at Big Springs. Seems that fans stood in a nearby yard, “waving” and cheering each shooter as they passed by! Some competitors happily responded with a “wave” of their own!

R/U Sam Hagan with a big grin after shooting a 92

Manual traps are the norm at Big Springs, as well as relatively close targets. This does not mean the course was easy, as many stations offered difficult challenges for even the best shooters in the series. Where do you shoot “white” rabbits? At Big Springs, of course...on Easter weekend!

Mike Redmond was certainly on target, as he has been through most of the series. He shot an excellent score of 93 to win the event. Good job, Mike! Close behind was Sam Hagan who won AA with a great score of 92. Another noteworthy performance was Joey Pulley’s 91 to take the win in B-class. Congratulations to all the class winners.

Mike Redmond shot a 93 to make it two wins in a row!

The next Winter Series shoot will be at Flint Springs near Cleveland, Tenn. The club is now under the management of Bill McGuire, who is one of the finest shots in the world. He definitely knows how to set a tough tournament course, so be ready to see world-class targets. Incidentally, Bill just won another big victory at the 2005 East Coast Championship in North Carolina!

Don’t let opening day of turkey season, next Saturday, interfere with your participation at Flint Springs. Everyone knows that wild turkeys gobble best on Sunday! See you all at Flint Springs. Right, Sam and Fergy?
