2004 U.S. Open Attracts Tennessee Entries!
Many TCTC members competed with world’s best. Wendell Cherry is Fitasc Champion.
Sam Houston and Davy Crockett must have been smiling as several Tennessee volunteers traveled to American Shooting Center in Houston, Texas to compete in one of the biggest sporting clays competitions in the world: the U.S. Open.
The 2004 NSCA event attracted almost 1000 entries from the United States and many countries abroad. The six-days of intense competition included Fitasc, Five-stand and Sporting Clays. Tennessee shooters certainly did well at this year’s event.
Jamie Riggs made a strong showing in the Lady’s Concurrent by placing 3rd in the Lady’s Main Sporting, 3rd in the Lady’s Kemen Cup, and 8th in the Lady’s Fitasc. Jamie has had several wins in 2004 and many more are certainly coming her way.
16-year-old Greg Jackson of Dickson, Tenn. claimed much success in his first U.S. Open. Shooting in AA Class, Greg placed 3rd in the Sporting Prelim, 4th in Fitasc, 2nd in the Five-stand, 1st in the 28 gauge, 4th in 410 gauge and 7th in the 20 gauge. Greg racked up a total of 21 punches in the U.S. Open to move from AA to Master-class. Good job, Greg!
Nashville’s Nat Harris turned in an exceptional tournament performance. Shooting in the Veteran’s Concurrent, Nat placed 5th in the Veteran Sporting Main, 7th in the Veteran Five-stand, and 5th in Veteran Fitasc. A very accomplished master-class shooter, Nat’s strong showing comes as little surprise. Congratulations to Nat!
Doug Vaughn caught fire and scored 1st place in AA in the Kemen Cup. Wow! In the Prelim, Doug also placed 6th in AA class. Well known as a keen competitor in his home state of Tennessee, such success could not happen for a nicer person.
Wendell Cherry again demonstrated why he is one of the top guns in the world today. The 2003 U.S. Open Champion was crowned the 2004 U.S. Open Fitasc Champion after shooting an impressive score of 94 X 100! Wendell also placed M5 in the Five-stand event.
Many others from Tennessee competed in the 2004 U.S. Open including Bill McGuire, Doug Jackson, Kay Graham, Mark Barnett and Mark Barnett, Jr.
The 2004 U.S. Open was a wonderful shoot and all had a great time. Who knows? Maybe one year, the U.S. Open will take place in the Volunteer state. Now, wouldn't old Sam and Davy would like that!
