2004 Tennessee Sporting Clays State Championship
Record attendance! Bill McGuire is new state champ!
The Tennessee Clay Target Complex was honored the host the 2004 Tennessee State Sporting Clays Championship, held July 9-11. The big event drew the largest attendance in the history of the championship with 200+ entries, up considerably from 2003.
Clay target championships held at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex in 2004 have seen exceptional growth in total attendance. The 2004 Tennessee State Trap Championship, which recently concluded, had its largest number of entries in its history. Many are expecting record entries for the upcoming 2004 NSSA State Skeet Championship to be held at TCTC in August.

“The expansion and improvements of TCTC facilities allow larger events to be accommodated while providing competitors greater comfort and convenience,” said TCTC director Frank Bloom. “Plans are to continue a path of progress. Shooters will see additional improvements at TCTC during the 2005 state championship!”
The event progressed smoothly thanks to the hard work of many. Our Special thanks to Melissa Ragsdale for attending to a myriad of details. Also, recognition must be extended to Frank Bloom and Katherine Maddox. TSCA president, Rhonda Barfield, was precise and pleasant, as always. The TCTC staff deserves appreciation for an extra hard week of service. Thanks to each and every one of the volunteers and event sponsors.

A championship sporting clays event requires championship targets. Jason Menke, trap guru at Briley/Mattarrelli, arrived from Texas to set the course. Throughout the shoot, compliments were heard regarding the imaginative and challenging targets being thrown. Few targets were long, but complex target lines kept top shooters scratching their heads.
Equally important as setting the traps are the quality of personnel pulling the traps. TCTC engaged scorekeepers from Southeast Illinois University. These bright college students have a wealth of experience scoring top shoots across the country, such as the US Open. Each performed with a high degree of professionalism and contributed greatly to the success of this shoot.
The scores for each event are posted with this article. Three cheers for the new Tennessee State Champion, Bill McGuire. Bill is known as one of the top competitors in the sport and always a gracious winner. Congratulations to Tom Ruck who performed brilliantly to win the main event HOA honors. Joe B. Cantey showed why he is a member of Team USA by dominating the Fitasc competition.
Congratulations to young Sam Jackson for winning the sub-junior championship! Also, congratulations to Travis Carroll for winning sub-junior in the preliminary event. Greg Jackson won the junior title and Susan Wall claimed the ladies concurrent.
Congratulations to each of the winners and thanks to all of the competitors.
The Tennessee Sporting Clays Association conducted its annual membership meeting during the championship. The membership voted by ballots to conduct the Tennessee State Sporting Clays Championship at TCTC in 2005. It is a privilege to host the championship and the TCTC board of directors wish to express appreciation to the membership for the opportunity and the vote of confidence.
The 2004 Tennessee State Championship is now a piece of history. We can all look forward to an even grander event in 2005.
