TCL “Sportsman Shoot” Surpasses Goal
Event raised needed dollars for conservation!
Paul Revere would have been proud as over 80 shooters answered the “call to arms” to help support the Tennessee Conservation League through participation in the 2004 “Sportsman Shoot.”
The Tennessee Conservation League is the largest and oldest not-for-profit conservation organization in Tennessee. Outdoor writers and sportsmen founded TCL in 1946 to champion the conservation of Tennessee’s fish and wildlife and their habitat for current and future generations of Tennesseans. Funds raised by the Sportsman Shoot are very important to the mission of TCL.
A Friday night banquet, at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex clubhouse, kicked off the festivities. A lavish selection of gourmet food satisfied the most discriminating palate. The event was attended by a “who’s who” of business, community and conservation leaders, each supporting the work of TCL.
Blessed with spectacular weather, the sporting clays competition began timely on Saturday morning. The beautiful sporting clays course offered hittable but challenging targets.
“I set the course to be a little more difficult than some of our previous shoots,” said TCTC manager Larry Summarell. “The wind was definitely a factor with the slower targets. Some stations and target combinations were particularly challenging.”
The winner of the event was 16 year-old Greg Jackson with a top score of 96 X 100, while Frank Bloom was in hot pursuit with a score of 95. Team Honda won the team competition while last year’s champs, Team Dupont, finished second.
“I wish to express sincere appreciation to everyone who participated in this years event. The support allows TCL to continue its important mission for the sportsman and for conservation initiatives across the state.” said TCL director, Mike Butler. “I also wish to thank the staff of the Tennessee Clay Target Complex for their help and for the use of the beautiful facilities.”
The only bad aspect of the 2004 Sportsman Shoot was that it had to come to an end. Everyone had wonderful time, so make plans to attend the 2005 shoot.
You can bet that next year, even more Tennessee volunteers will answer the “call to arms” in support of the Tennessee Conservation League.
