Winter Series Sporting Clays Shoot a BIG Success!

Large field of 99 shooters competed. Wendell Cherry shoots 87 to claim top honors.

It was the last day of January and 20 degrees, but droves of sporting clays shooters ignored the cold and arrived at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex with “springtime” enthusiasm to compete in the TSCA Winter Tournament Series. Registration was made easy thanks to the expertise of TSCA president Rhonda Barfield. While surprised by the large entry, the staff of the Tennessee Clay Target Complex led by Chad Williams and Larry Summarell conducted the shoot with aplomb.

The course was technical and challenging. Larry Summarell, TCTC director of shooting, combined creative variations of target speed, distance and angles with the terrain to deceive even the best shooters. “Only 2 stations had targets with kill zones exceeding 45 yards. To shoot a high score, you had to study the target lines and speed very closely,” said Summarell.

Many top shooters competed in the event including Wendell Cherry, Bill McGuire and 2003 state champion, David Cole. Humbled competitors praised the course. “No station could be taken for granted, but the targets were all hittable and fair,” said junior winner, Greg Jackson. HOA winner, Wendell Cherry was over heard complementing the layout, adding that the course offered “mid-season” targets “early” in the year.

A warm clubhouse and a hot meal greeted cold shooters returning from the course. Many thanks to Melanie Mundy for preparing the delicious lunch. All of the five-star amenities at TCTC combine to ensure a great time for everyone.

Speaking of amenities, many improvements occurred at TCTC in 2003 such as the construction of the new clubhouse, new Mattarelli traps for sporting and skeet, trap automation, new paving and additional parking, to name a few. Many improvements are planned for 2004 including construction of a new, covered five-stand, additional trap & skeet fields and a 2200 square foot deck on the back of the clubhouse over-looking the Cumberland river. Future plans even include a second sporting clays course!

All of the improvements are designed to provide shooters a world-class facility and an enjoyable experience. To sustain the momentum, your support is very important. It is a great time to become a member of the Tennessee Clay Target Complex. Support TCTC and clay target sports by joining today!

The final shoot in the Winter Series will be at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex on April 10th. It promises to be another great shoot, so mark your calendar!
